Arrange your ham,share the pleasure.

In a spiral, rows or a fan:
give every slice its place.

Choose a clean plate and arrange the slices so they can be picked up without pulling the others along. To make a spiral, start at the edge and work towards the centre, overlapping them slightly. If you want to serve 100 grams, weigh them: the number of slices varies with their size and thickness.

Prepare the slices and decide the amount

Aim for thin, manageable slices that are comfortable to eat in one bite. Similar sizes help create an orderly presentation, but you do not need to cut every slice to an exact measurement or discard smaller pieces.

Adjust the amount according to the number of people and whether the ham is the main appetiser or part of a larger selection. Use scales to measure a particular portion; a fixed slice count is not a reliable weight measure.

Choose a plate with enough room

A plain white plate makes the colour of the ham stand out. A round plate suits a spiral, while a long platter works well for rows or fans. Leave enough room to keep the slices from becoming a dense pile. If necessary, use two plates.

A spiral, step by step

  1. Place the first slice near the outer edge, leaving the rim clean.
  2. Continue around the plate, overlapping the slices slightly and keeping their orientation consistent.
  3. Once the outer circle is complete, work inwards with another ring without hiding all the slices underneath.
  4. Check that the slices are easy to pick up and remove any marks or loose scraps from the rim.

You can turn the visible strip of fat towards the centre to create a consistent pattern. This is a presentation choice, not a requirement for enjoying the ham.

A fan or rows

For a fan, angle each slice slightly from the previous one with a small overlap. On a long platter, make one or more rows with space between them. Both arrangements make it easy to adjust the serving to the size of the plate.

Serve only what you will eat

Follow the producer's serving and storage recommendations. A serving temperature suggestion concerns tasting; it does not replace storage requirements or justify leaving all the ham out for hours. Open only the pack you need and separate the slices gently.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use a round plate?

No. A round plate makes a spiral easier; on a long plate you can arrange the slices in rows or a fan.

How many slices do I need for a portion?

That depends on their size. Use weight to measure a specific quantity.
