Compare the product, the format
and what your purchase includes.

A single brand may offer products with different designations, weights and preparation options. Before comparing two hams, identify the exact product and format. A brand’s history provides context, but your choice should rest on the information about the ham you are buying.

Start with the designation

Check whether the product is Iberian and, where applicable, which breed percentage and category it declares. Do not assign the same classification to an entire brand or infer certification from a commercial name. If you want a Protected Designation of Origin product, check its specific identification.

What production information tells you

Read the producer’s information about curing and the specific product. The curing cellar’s location does not in itself prove where all the animals were reared. Nor does a longer curing period automatically allow brands to be ranked from best to worst.

Compare equivalent products

  • The designation and category declared on the product.
  • Weight and format: whole leg, boneless or sliced.
  • Included preparation and delivered net weight.
  • Final price and storage conditions.

The price per kilo of a bone-in ham is not equivalent to that of a ready-to-eat product. To compare brands, choose products in the same format and a comparable category.

Choose for how you will use it

A whole leg for regular carving at home involves different needs from a few sliced packs for occasional use. Consider your budget, the space available and how much you will eat. If a description does not make the category, weight or preparation clear, ask the seller before deciding.

Does a familiar brand replace reading the label?
